Intellectual property and patents
Color Intelligence Inc. develops proprietary color science, image analysis, and grading technologies for professional post-production. This page identifies the technologies for which patent applications are pending, together with the proprietary technologies and trade secrets owned by Color Intelligence Inc.
Patent-pending technologies
The following technologies are the subject of pending patent applications filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) by Color Intelligence Inc.
PIA Engine (Perceptual Image Analyzer)
Patent pending (USPTO). Color Intelligence Inc.'s proprietary image analysis system for perceptually-grounded color and tone evaluation, including zone-based exposure analysis, saliency-weighted color metrics, and intent inference. The PIA Engine underlies analysis features across Colourlab Ai products.
X03 File Format
Patent pending (USPTO). A container format developed by Color Intelligence Inc. for storing color grading references, including float-precision lookup data, scene metadata, and semantic embeddings. The X03 specification, including its data layout and read/write methods, is the subject of pending patent protection.
Content-Responsive Film Emulation
Patent pending (USPTO). A method for film emulation in which the emulation response — including but not limited to halation, grain, and tonal shaping — adapts based on the content of the image being processed.
Intent-Learning Agentic Grading Workflow
Patent pending (USPTO). An AI-driven system for inferring colorist intent from reference materials and prior grading decisions, and for applying learned preferences across a grading session through an agentic workflow.
Proprietary technologies
The following are proprietary technologies of Color Intelligence Inc., protected as trade secrets and by copyright, and, where applicable, by pending trademark filings.
JPLog2
A proprietary log encoding developed by Josh Pines for Color Intelligence Inc. for high-fidelity, scene-referred color processing across the Colourlab pipeline. Trademark application pending with the USPTO.
Q Color Space (QPT)
A proprietary perceptual opponent-channel color space developed by Color Intelligence Inc. for color analysis, matching, and grading applications. Trademark application pending with the USPTO.
Ownership
All intellectual property identified on this page — including all patents, patent applications, proprietary technologies, source code, algorithms, file format specifications, neural network architectures and weights, and related documentation — is owned exclusively by Color Intelligence Inc. No license, express or implied, is granted to any party by virtue of the publication of this information.
Use restrictions
Without the prior written authorization of Color Intelligence Inc., you may not:
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble any Color Intelligence Inc. software, library, or engine, including the PIA Engine, except to the extent expressly permitted by applicable law.
- Extract, replicate, or reimplement the X03 file format, in whole or in part, including by developing third-party readers, writers, importers, exporters, or converters for the format, without a license from Color Intelligence Inc.
- Reproduce, adapt, or create derivative works based on JPLog2, Q Color Space (QPT), or the content-responsive film emulation methods described above.
- Train machine learning models on the outputs of Color Intelligence Inc. products for the purpose of replicating, approximating, or competing with their behavior.
Any unauthorized use of technology covered by a pending patent application may give rise to claims for damages and other relief once a corresponding patent is granted.
Licensing inquiries
Color Intelligence Inc. selectively licenses its technologies for integration into third-party applications, services, and hardware. Inquiries regarding licensing of the PIA Engine, the X03 file format, JPLog2, Q Color Space (QPT), or any other Color Intelligence Inc. technology should be directed to:
